LHC rap
Check it out, funny and informative.
Last Friday I left my job at Vericom Corporation that I’ve had all summer. I’m taking two weeks off before I go back to SCAD to relax and work on personal work. Last few days I’ve been busy working at my A\V job but thats clearing up to so I’ve had some time to myself which is a welcome change from the norm. Drew and inked this one last night and this morning. Probably about 3-4 hours of work so far. I need to speed up my process but so far I’m pretty happy as it stand. Started with a 20% cool gray Prismacolor marker. Inked with .005, .01, .03, .05, and .08 Primacolor pens [which I'm trying for the first time]. Cleaned up in Photoshop CS3.

Just got the .psd file ready for value and color. Taking a break to run some errands soon but I hope to get pretty far into values and colors this afternoon and tonight.
I came across this tutorial on abduzeedo about creating a really cool eclipse effect a while back and wanted to share it. this Photoshop is an amazingly powerful tool, but with so many options, settings, tools, and choices it can be confusing and daunting to many. Anyone who knows photoshop knows the brush tool but a lot of beginners don’t know about custom brush creation. This tutorial shows the basics of brush creation, the brush settings menu, the color layer blending option, and to top it all off a generally really cool effect. I really suggest reading and going through this quick and easy tutorial.

Did the original pencil sketch during a war hammer session then inked and colored it a few days back. Not amazingly happy with the sketch as parts are out of proportion, but it was a good excuse to work on some new work flow ideas and try and refine my process a bit. I’m really trying to get my work flow down and figured out in the buildup to heading back to SCAD.

Just doodles for today. Felt inspired but not in any one direction. Some of this stuff may end up in finalized work.
Been really tied every day getting home from work so I have not really been able to post much…or get one the net much at all recently. But I did get to do some photography recently. Photography has always been an interest of mine but I’ve never really had the time to sit down and learn it. I have a Cannon Digital Rebel XT and have played around with it a fare bit but its been on the far back burner to other more pressing issues. I think I’ll be able to do a bit more now. A few pictures from some recent shoots below.

No, I have not forgotten about writing and posting…I just have not done anything recently that’s not under NDA. I’ve been completely slammed with work and have not really been able to get much in edgewise. I’m taking tomorrow and Friday off though so I should be able to get some actual work done.

I work at a desk job doing design work from 8:30am to 5:30pm good ‘ol Monday through Friday when I’m not at SCAD. Gotta be up at 6:30 – 6:45am to make my carpool at 7:45. Once I get home I’ve got freelance work. In addition to paid work, I’ve got my girlfriend [who thank God is understanding], friends, family, practice time, and some time to relax, and oh ya updating my blog and keeping track of the world in general. In all this, sleep usually gets unceremoniously tossed out into the proverbial darkness, with the screaming and gnashing of teeth. Next morning I’m walking around tripping on my shoes from the night before and can’t even see straight or think till I’ve had a very large sip of some very strong coffee.
If your an art student or work in the commercial arts industry [or for that matter are a geek, nerd, dweeb, etc] this probably sounds pretty familiar. But why do we do this to ourselves? Most of society seems to get by on the standard daytime awake, nighttime sleep schedule and they do just fine. What is it that makes the night so appealing to so many of us? So appealing in fact that we put ourselves though this hellish morning just to be able to keep it up. Why is it that we thrive at night?
4. We like to be different
“Artists are most likely to question society and tradition…Personally I’d feel too much like a robot if I had to be in bed at a certain time every night.” A friend of mine told be this while I was writing this article and I think it rings true to a lot of us. Conformity is a four letter word in our wold. You can’t keep to the world’s schedule, you have to rebel, you have to carve your own path, you have to be different! Not that it’s a bad thing, we’re expected to be different and when we get hired a lot of clients want that unique touch you get by hiring a real designer or artist. For many of us, being different keeps us going and inspires us to keep going.
3. Solitude
The night offers a much quieter, time to work. Most everything is closed, and most people are asleep. We can really concentrate. During the day we’ve got jobs, friends, family, and distractions everywhere. At night we can really start to focus. People like us tend to be easily distracted. We’re always looking at the world around us so the smallest thing can get us off track on some new and grand idea.
2. We’re Busy
The commercial art world is nothing if not demanding, and so is art school. Our assignments can take around 20+ hours just for one drawing. There are times when we do have to work through the night whether we like it or not. If you don’t like it now chances are your going to have to grow to like it. A lot of artists I know have classes all day, and then end up working till midnight on their homework and personal work. Its the kind of dedication it takes to succeed in this world. A lot of people out there think that its just a 9 to 5, but to be the best you gotta always be looking, always be working, always be improving and always be learning. Day and night. Sleep is for the weak!
1. Inspiration
This may seem a bit of a cop-out, but I think it holds true and deserves a point to itself. One of my good friends put it this way, “I get inspired throughout the day… and since my day is usually busy I don’t get to do what I want until late.” We all get these great ideas throughout the day and we don’t want to lose them. We carry around sketchbooks, and take notes, but nothing really keeps that image like sitting down and actually making it. A lot of non-artists might scoff at this. “Just write it down and make it later!” But you know better. You want to capture that exact emotion and idea and it just can’t wait till tomorrow. Or worse you might loose it as you sleep. Or how many times have you woken up with a great idea a few hours after drifting off. I’ve tried the sketchbook next to my bed but these days I end up just getting up, booting up photoshop and going at it.
Call me crazy but I like being a night owl.
Well I did my first speed painting tonight. I like the great freedom of working digitally. And now that I’m no longer held back by my equipment I can really use all that freedom. Its not amazing, but I’m happy with it as I got my vision across, except for the jungle is a bit too bright I think. Well now the learning begins.
On Saturday I finally got my new 24″ iMac that I’ve been working towords. I think I’ve finally got things settled in and so far I’m loving it.
The Specs
- Dual 2.8 Ghz Processors
- 500 gig Hard Drive
- 512mb nVidia graphics card
- 2 gigs of RAM
The unboxing went pretty smooth. Everything was where it was supposed to be and I got to give props to apple for their little details. Things like labeling their first CD packet “Everything Mac”. You take it out and immediately see another packet labeled “Everything Else.” I know it sounds small but its little details like that that set Apple apart from everyone else. Once I got everything hooked up and booted up I was treated to a very pretty welcome animation before setting up the basic settings. After that it just came down to software installs and getting my settings how I wanted them. Also ended up just making my own desktop background as I could not find any good 1920×1200 ones I liked on short notice.
As far as my current experience goes I could not be more pleased. I have run into no major issues and I’m finding new ways to increase my productivity every day. Got the CS3 Web Premium suite installed and have started messing around in there a bit. Gonna be working on some web design in the near future [probably tomorrow]. I think I might do another music journal entry soon, and I hope I can keep the artwork flowing.
So long for now.
Really….I need it
Inspiration can come from many places. Friends, surroundings, the web, etc….today I was uninspired so design and practice did not yield the most amazing things in the world. But here’s what I got.
Contrast is lacking, as is interest….or….well good design. Suggestion and critique welcome.
